Why not come down and experience the "Gentle Art" of people folding.

Plymouth Ju-Jitsu Club was first started in the late 1970's at Fighting Fit Club based at Rendle Street. We then moved to Stonehouse Barracks.

Chris Burch then took over the role of instructor and thus Plymouth Ju-Jitsu was established.

Forming his first own club in Tamerton Foliot mainly training people from the police force, Shihan Chris Burch was then asked if he could run a childrens Ju-Jitsu club, so he did and the age range was from 6 to 16 year olds.

He then decided to try running another club as well as Tamerton, he found a club called Ki Martial Arts in Rendle Street and asked the instructor if he could hold a Ju-Jitsu class 1 night a week. The instructor agreed to this and so on a Tuesday night he held another class. Ki Martial Arts wanted to move to a different location after many years of training and was bought by Anton St. James, who called the club Master St. James Black Belt Academy.

Shihan Chris Burch carried on training there and is still training there today.

Plymouth Ju-Jitsu Club also specialise in Katrate Kobudo which is the weapon form of Martial Art, these weapons include the Katana sword, Nunchaku, Tonfa, Sai, Bo, Jo, Kama, just to name a few of the weapons we use.

Shihan Chris Burch
Shihan Chris Burch started training back in 1980 at the age of 17 with the Royal Marines at Stonehouse Barracks in Plymouth, his Sensei then was Sensei Neil Pearce.

After 10 years of very hard training sessions, Chris started teaching in 1990 when Sensei Neil Pearce retired leaving Chris Burch the club. This was then named Plymouth Ju-Jitsu.

So he could further advance in his Martial Arts, Chris moved to the World Ju-Jitsu Federation in 1994, where he is still a valued member.

He first started teaching with the WJJF and opened his own club at Tamerton Foliot church hall, after years of training and teaching there, he decided to open another club, this time at Rendle Street, Plymouth...where he is still teaching today.

In January 2007 Chris decided to leave the WJJF and venture out on his own and founded South West Ju-Jitsu which incorporates Plymouth Ju-Jitsu, Ivybridge Ju-Jitsu and Bridgwater Ju-Jitsu

Sensei Paul Olford
Sensei Paul Olford has been practising Ju-Jitsu for 8 years. He first got involved in it when he was working as a door supervisor in the town centre, when a friend introduced him to Shihan Chris Burch.

After a few sessions he was hooked and the more he trained the more self confidence he gained.

He was awarded the Shodan Black Belt in September 2006 and since then he has qualified as a club coach.

He has also had the pleasure in being invited to the World Ju-Jitsu Federation Headquarters in Liverpool to assess the juniors on their grading days.

In November 2008, Paul took his 2nd Degree Black Belt and successfully passed, he is now training towards his 3rd Degree.
